The Hand that Rocks the Cradle

I used to like Barbara Bush.

But what does one make of someone who thinks that living in the Houston Astrodome is better than living in one’s own home?

This is the woman who raised the President of the United States.

The man who was raised the President of the United States, when he was President himself, couldn’t even figure out how to shop in a grocery store.

I think this explains much.  I think this explains how the man in the Oval Office can be so clueless about things like poverty and suffering.

It’s not just that Dubya is a rich frat-boy.  It’s that he’s a spoiled rich frat-boy.  It’s not just that he never wanted for anything; it’s that his parents never instilled in him any sense of empathy for people who weren’t as lucky as he was.

I miss Bill Clinton.  He may have been a liar who couldn’t keep it in his pants, but as a friend suggested recently, had Hurricane Katrina happened on his watch, he would’ve been out sandbagging with everyone else instead of using up scarce petroleum hovering over the scene in the isolation and comfort of Air Force One.
