More Wedding Etiquette

A wedding guest may not assume that he or she may bring a date.  Miss Manners plainly states that couples must be invited as a couple; couple includes married couples, engaged couples, and otherwise firmly attached pairs.  However, an unattached guest who wishes to be escorted must first ask if this is acceptable.  And hosts may politely decline to invite a stranger or casual acquaintance to the intimate and solemn occasion that is a wedding – or to any social engagement, for that matter.
