Just when I think we’re going overboard, Part 2

April 6, 2006 psipsina

Last night I was channel-surfing and ran across a show on WE called “Bridezillas!”  It is a reality show about women who let their weddings turn them into raging Beyotches on Wheels.

Great, I thought.  This will make me feel better about my own excesses.

I was right.  The main story last night was about Magdalena, a woman who has gotten totally stressed out about the cost of her wedding.

Hey, I can relate to that.  These things ain’t cheap.

But I started getting suspicious when she mentioned that she was late to meet with the banker to sign the papers to refinance her home.

How the hell much was she spending on this wedding, anyway?

Later they revealed it was about $60,000.  They spent $6,000 on flowers alone.

So, Magdalena is stressed out because of financial pressure, and is taking it out on everyone from the mariachi band to the manicurist.  But whose fault is it that she’s under financial pressure?  Is it the manicurist’s fault?  The mariachi band’s?

No, Magdalena, dear, it is your own damn fault.

And thus, I figured out what reality TV is for.  It is there to make the rest of us feel like we’re OK by comparison.
