Beach Boys Earworm

September 20, 2006 psipsina

For once I’ve got an earworm that’s beautiful instead of annoying:

The Beach Boys, “God Only Knows

Paul McCartney, no slouch himself when it comes to pretty love songs (or greatness, for that matter), called this the greatest love song of all time.  (“Here, There, and Everywhere” is obviously influenced by it.)

Plus, you gotta love a song that employs both a harpsichord and coconut hoofbeats to such great effect.

Personally, I think that a great many classical composers would’ve used coconut hoofbeats, if they’d known that such a thing as a coconut existed.  Mozart certainly would’ve, and probably Bach, too.  (Imagine the St. Matthew Passion with a little bit of clippity-clop during the triumphal entry into Jerusalem.)  My instinct is that Beethoven was too tortured to do anything as charming as coconuts, but then again, so is Brian Wilson.  On the other hand, Beethoven, to my knowledge, never wrote an entire song about eating your vegetables.
