Tune Wedgie

April 12, 2007 psipsina

A coworker just informed me that the occurrence I refer to by the name earworm is also known as a tune wedgie.

On the face of it, this is a brilliant name – something that gets forceably, unpleasantly stuck where it does not belong.  But it fails to capture the worst problem with these songs that get stuck in our head – the difficulty of getting them out.  With a wedgie, all you have to do is, er, adjust something when no one is looking.  Would that it were so with the current bit of crappy pop music stuck in my head right now (which I will not share with you this time, it’s that bad).
